Press release -CFW calf brings hope for rhino conservation
A birth is always a celebration! It signifies new beginnings, hope and the continuation of a species. And when it comes to the birth of a healthy, bouncy rhino calf, celebrations always turn into jubilation! This is exactly how Protecting the Rhino feels since Care For Wild Rhino Sanctuary (CFW) announced the birth of Wyntir and Storm’s baby girl this week.
The new addition at CFW, which was born on Sunday and has yet to be named, made history by becoming the world’s first-ever rhino calf to be conceived and birthed naturally to parents that were both orphaned due to poaching.
“Our congratulations and praise go out to the CFW team, led by Petronel Niewoudt, for their commitment to conservation and the protection of the species. What they have achieved at CFW is remarkable and the birth of Wyntir’s baby is proof thereof!” says Protecting the Rhino spokesperson Kathleen Greeff
Protecting the Rhino’s journey with Wyntir and CFW started in July 2014, when she arrived at the sanctuary after being saved by tourists in the Kruger National Park. The tiny, mauled Wyntir was in critical condition on arrival, and no one knew if she would survive. Not only had she lost her mother to heartless poachers, but she had also been attacked by a cackle of hyena, resulting in life-threatening injuries.
On hearing of Wyntir’s ordeal, we jumped at the opportunity to assist in her recovery by partnering with the sanctuary and adopting her.
“Through the years there have been times when we were saddened by the thought that the war on rhino poaching was lost, but the birth of Wyntir and Storm’s calf is testimony that good can overcome evil and that the fight is far from over.”
Congratulations Wyntir, Storm and CFW! You have made us proud!
